Did You Even Consider Face Shape When Asking for a Trending Hairstyle? Neither Did I…

I have always had my hair parted down the middle while experimenting with new ways to switch up my hair and develop my style. As any girl would, I tried a different color first, but after a few months, went back to my original color. Then that got boring, so I started to look into ways to change up my hair.

One day I was at the hair salon for a routine blowout with one of the Hair Etc. Salon and Spa stylists. I noticed she had her hair pinned to the side. She told me she was training her hair to part deeper on the side. This was the perfect opportunity for me to change my hair. So, of course, I asked her to deep-part my hair for me.

She explained that with my round face shape, the middle part looks best because it elongates my face to make it appear more oval. I never considered face shape for trending hairstyles because I only thought about color. I had never considered my face shape until that moment. But accurately identifying your face shape is another challenge because we don’t see ourselves objectively and what might appear as oval to you, might be round. However, websites such as face shape may help you more accurately figure out your face shape.

Consulting your stylist is the most reliable way of exploring which trending hairstyles best complement your face shape, while taking hair texture, lifestyle, color, and level of maintenance into consideration,  Their training, the hundreds of clients they see monthly, and their focus on trends, put them in the best position to provide advice.

However, if you want to explore options before your appointment, I recommend Googling a celebrity with similar features. Then, use the image tab to source pictures from their work or special event appearances. With hair trends changing so often, I choose the styles that appeal to me and save these images for inspiration.

Need a head start? I’ve created a list describing five different face shapes and showing which hairstyles work best to give you some immediate options to consider.

Round Face
Chrissy Teigen, Selena Gomez, and Emma Stone

Having a round face means that the width and length of the face are nearly equal, resulting in a circular or oval shape. People with round faces have soft, curved jawlines and fuller, rounded cheekbones, giving their facial features a softer appearance.

Best Hairstyles: Long layers, side-swept bangs, and asymmetrical elongate the face. Avoid blunt cuts.

Square Face
Angelina Jolie, Margot Robbie and Paris Hilton

A square face has a distinct angular appearance with a broad forehead, pronounced jawline, and straight cheekbones. The forehead width, cheekbones, and jawline are typically equal, giving the face a symmetrical structure.

Best Hairstyles: Soft, layered cuts, textured waves, and side parts. Avoid blunt bangs and straight, boxy styles.

Oval Face
Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, and Bella Hadid

Having an oval face is characterized by balanced proportions and a versatile shape, with the length of the face being about one and a half times the width.

People with an oval face shape typically have gently rounded jawlines, slightly wider cheekbones, and a forehead that is neither too narrow nor too wide.

Best Hairstyles: Lucky you! Oval faces can pull off almost any hairstyle, from pixie cuts to long waves. Experiment with different looks that work best with your hair texture and lifestyle!

Heart Face
Kourtney Kardashian, Reese Witherspoon, and Zendaya

Having a heart-shaped face means your face widens at the temples and tapers down to a pointed chin, resembling an inverted triangle or a heart. It's characterized by a broad forehead, defined cheekbones, and a narrower chin, giving it a delicate and feminine appearance.

Best Hairstyles: Soft, side-swept bangs, chin-length bobs, and layers around the jawline balance out the proportions. Avoid excessive volume at the crown, which can emphasize the

wideness of the forehead.

Diamond Face
Jennifer Lopez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Greene

Having a diamond face shape is characterized by high cheekbones, a narrow forehead, and a narrow, pointed chin. This shape is defined by its distinctive width at the cheekbones, which are typically the widest part of the face, and a narrower width at the forehead and jawline.

Best Hairstyles: Textured layers, side parts, and chin-length bobs with volume at the jawline add width to the narrower areas of the face. Avoid excessive volume at the crown, which can make the face appear longer.

It's time to rethink your approach to experimenting with different cuts by not overlooking your unique face shape. Consulting with your stylist can make all the difference in finding a look that works best with your lifestyle, hair texture, and truly complements your features. Whether you're a round-faced beauty like Chrissy Teigen or a heart-faced stunner like Reese Witherspoon, there's a hairstyle out there that will make you feel like a million bucks.
